Artworks of the artist
Born in 1951 in Neuenhain, Elvira Bach is a German painter. She lives and works in Berlin.
Elvira Bach works on the image of women and their role in society.
She studied glass at the Staatliche Glasfachschule Hadamar and visual arts at the Berlin Academy of Arts. She worked as a prop and prompter for the theatre «Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer» for almost ten years.
In 1982, the artist was the first woman invited to participate in the Documenta de Kassel. It was also that same year that she joined the artist residency of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.
Soon after, she spent long stays in Senegal, where she married and Elvira Bach became the mother of two children.
In addition to painting and glass, the artist also practices sculpture, making large-format works in bronze and plastic.
In the 1980s, the artist Elvira Bach was considered part of the emerging «Neue Wilde» movement in Germany and Austria; these artists painted in a subjective and indifferent way, a certain affirmation of life. Like the Fauves in France, their works of art are characterized by the use of warm and bold colors and claim an art based on instinct.
They separate the color from its reference to the object, in order to accentuate the expression, and react provocatively against visual sensations and softness.
