Artworks of the artist
Jean-Paul Turmel is a sculptor, photographer and painter who was born in 1954 in Tournan en Brie in France. Turmel cites his passion for sculpture and the creation of three-dimensional work as the influence for his non-objective forms. They are heavily etched and often overlaid, with relief impressions brought to life through light and dark hues.
He works on steel sheets, folding and cutting them and uses the same process when preparing his etching plates. He is looking for a relief impression and plays with light and darkness.
The expressive heavy strokes of colour empowered by the aquatint process bring depth to the imagined abstract shapes. His subjects are often thin figures but he also creates series of abstract subjects. Turmel has designed many sets for stage productions as well being the lead designer on decorating the exteriors of large industrial units across France.
