Artworks of the artist
He was born in Paris in 1945 and spent his childhood travelling with his parents in a circus.
In 1968 he enrolled in the School of Fine Arts in Paris and devoted himself to engraving and painting. He now teaches the rudiments of the art of engraving at the school. Jean Pierry Tanguy’s work reflects all that he has seen during his years of travelling, often displaying the photographs that inspired each piece at his exhibitions. “This is the work of a life that is presented here.”
His pieces create a sense of realism and abstraction but always reflecting that same boost of energy. “What I hope … is that people can find themselves in the travel impressions they had. Here I bring proposals
to the imagination.”
The imagined, dark, silhouetted shapes of his work are bold and figurative against the washed colours of the background, creating a sense of perspective. However abstracted the forms may be, the gestural qualities offer
up a visual delight of exploration in to French modern art.
