DENNING

Ken Denning has been preoccupied with landscapes interpreted through different artistic effects.

Since practicing graphics, etching and drawing, the latter became the preferred mode of expression. His series of landscapes have been interpreted through the textual and condensed line of the etching needle. The approach to the organization of the picture surface uses contrast to the open and the closed, organic and the linear and the exploration of shade. The landscape is a sober noticeable form and Ken Denning gives the picture a special insistent present.

In the nineties Ken Denning adopted a more experimental attitude to the graphic expression. Different graphic techniques are often employed to the same picture. These are further worked with oil colour and acrylic. The picture composition becomes more a composition based on shifting and overlaps, giving a different perception of space. We still find the landscape through the underlying photo or through the basic characteristics of the landscape, horizontal line or vegetation. In some works, the oil colour ends up taking over the canvas, giving ‘pure’ paintings.
